About Us

Giron Sámi Teáhter

is the Sami people’s theater and represents a matter of importance for the whole of Sweden.

The theater has its roots in the free theater group Dálvadis, a pioneer group without a fixed stage that acted in Sami language on tour in Scandinavia, Europe and Canada.
In 1992 Sámi Teáhter was established and its name was changed to Giron Sámi Teáhter in 2009. The theater has its own stage, premises and administration in Kiruna. Giron Sámi Teáhter’s mission is to carry out professional performing arts based on the Sami culture and identity and to promote the Sámi languages by raising current issues.

PDF presentation

Giron Sámi Teáhter is an important venue for the performing arts and develops performing arts that are primarily aimed at all the Sami people. The various productions are aimed at children, teenagers, adults and elderly people. The theater has a repertoire in which the audience can enjoy performances in their own native language and language skills. This means that both the Sami language and Swedish are used as stage languages.

All of the theater’s shows go on tour in the Sami traditional settlement area, Sápmi as well as in other parts of Scandinavia.

The theater keeps growing by taking the initiative to offer seminars and talks between science and performing arts.
The theater conducts development works on scriptwriting and acting in order to stimulate interest in the theater.
